The Thunder and Lightning Bring on a Storm
On May 26, 2007, TFYR partnered with the Minnesota Thunder and Lightning soccer teams to host a World No Tobacco Day doubleheader game at the National Sports Center. It was an exciting day as the Lightning—Minnesota’s women’s soccer team—won their game against the Chicago Gaels 2-0.. The Thunder lost a close match against the Puerto Rico Islanders.
Youth and families from around the Midwest spent the day cheering on the Thunder and Lightning. At the game, youth were able to view tobacco-free pledges signed by Thunder and Lightning players. Approximately 150 youth joined the Thunder and Lightning in pledging to be tobacco free by signing tobacco-free pledges of their own. During the halftime, luck youth answered tobacco-related quiz questions and received prizes.
Fans received an “Reach Your Goal...Be Tobacco Free” poster after each game. The poster featured players from the Thunder and Lightning, and was developed by TFYR and the Minnesota Department of Health.
This year, several local sports teams from around the state partnered with tobacco control coalitions to bring a tobacco-free message to sports fans. Thanks to the efforts of the teams and coalition members, thousands of youth and adults learned that tobacco and sports don’t mix.
