Duluth Smoke-Free Restaurants

In November of 2001, Duluth citizens voted for a smoke-free ordinance which the city council had approved in May 2001. Under the ordinance, only bars that are separately ventilated and do not prepare and serve food (defined with a limited food service license), can allow smoking. Starting April 1, 2003, bowling alleys and pool halls will also be smoke-free.

Duluth’s ordinance has had a positive effect on the health of restaurant workers who no longer have secondhand smoke imposed upon them. It allows all patrons to have equal access to dining venues, without sacrificing their health. Comments from both employees and customers have been overwhelmingly positive. City sales tax receipts have shown no negative economic impact.
